Last year’s increase in conservatism among independents is holding

PRINCETON, NJ — Conservatives have maintained their leading position among U.S. ideological groups in the first half of 2010. Gallup finds 42% of Americans describing themselves as either very conservative or conservative. This is up slightly from the 40% seen for all of 2009 and contrasts with the 20% calling themselves liberal or very liberal.

The “first Latino/Hispanic American to be elected to the Milwaukee County Board” says:

“If this was Texas, which is a state that is directly on the border with Mexico, and they were calling for a measure like this saying that they had a major issue with undocumented people flooding their borders, I would have to look twice at this. But this is a state that is a ways removed from the border,” West said.

The trip-up was quickly caught by fellow Supervisor Joe Rice.

“I just want to assure my colleague that Arizona is a state that does in fact share a border with Mexico,” Rice said.

West said later she misspoke.”
