Post Election Analysis

Nothing is so funny as to await the second day after a political tsunami – that is when you can really differentiate between the rational people and the nuts, because this is really the Maximum Spin Zone. We have just begun the Forensic Period of an election, trying to determine “What Does It Mean?”

Well, to some, it is what it is, to others it is what it is but with a slight Variation of a Theme of Pagani. To still others, we are completely missing the meaning if we cannot see the “deeper meaning.”

“Unwilling to delay until tomorrow mistakes that could be made immediately, Democrats used 2010 to begin losing 2012.” (George Will)

and

“It’s the critical job that no Democrat seems to want but someone has to do — be the next chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee for the 2012 election cycle.

And Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is going to have to talk someone into doing it.

When asked on election night who would now lead the DSCC, New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez, the current chairman, answered jokingly.

“A crazy person,” he quipped.”

But I also watch MSNBC, and watch people tell me that the problem was that the President was not liberal enough, and once he catches his “progressive” stride he will be dominate once again – Single Payer, Cap and Trade, Card Check – those are the answer. The President has not been bold enough.

“Ousted Florida Rep. Alan Grayson, one of the most outspoken, liberal members of the House, said Thursday that Tuesday’s election was a “national disaster” and a repudiation of the Democrats’ “strategy of appeasement.”

In his first interview since losing his seat, Grayson upended conventional wisdom about his party’s 60-seat loss in the House, saying that if Democrats had been more progressive in their policies, Democratic voters would have gone to the polls.

“Our strategy for two years has been appeasement, and look where it got us,”

And even the President is in denial:

“”There seems to be some denial on the part of the president and other Democratic leaders of the message that was sent by the American people,” Boehner said today in an interview with ABC News’ Diane Sawyer. “When you have the most historic election in over 60, 70 years, you would think the other party would understand that the American people have clearly repudiated the policies they’ve put forward in the last two years.”

Obama told reporters at a press conference Wednesday the election results proved that people around the country are primarily frustrated with the state of the economy, not the administration’s legislative achievements on the stimulus, health care overhaul or financial reform. “

Yes, the economy is number one, two, three and four among the American people – but none of his other significant policies have had 50% of the American public support: “stimulus, health care overhaul or financial reform.” The ONLY administration policy with public support was Wall Street oversight.

President Obama says he wants to break out of the isolation in the White House, but if he thinks that moving around the country with his huge entourage, with all of his audiences vetted down to their grandfather’s voting record, he will not let the message get through.

Someone is not listening. The President says he understands, but has he? Every president knows there will be a mid-course correction but this was not a warning: This was a FIRING, with the courtesy of two years to clean out your desk.

Taxes! Taxes! Taxes!

The failure of Prop D, Prop J (both tax increases) has caused the gnashing of teeth among the proponents of raising taxes.

I have checked the statutes carefully, and there is no prohibition to paying more money to the district/city/state if you wish. If everyone who supports higher taxes would simply write a check the problem would be solved. Problem solved.

We have about a 50% voting rate, and assuming about 50% of the people support higher taxes — making actual public support something like 25% overall. If each of them would simply write a substantial check to their school district, city, county and state — those levels of government would have substantial money.

Years ago, I spoke to a Rotary Club in RB, opposing a school tax — but I brought with me self addressed and stamped envelopes to- Poway Unified. I  asked how many supported the tax, and asked those who raised their hands to write a check when I passed out the envelopes. You guessed it — ZERO checks were written.

If you support more school spending — write a check. If you support more police, write a check. If you support libraries, write a check…
