Class Dismissed…

Way back in October, even the first of November, Mayor Jerry Sanders warned the City of San Diego of their fate if they did not pass the half-cent sales tax known as Prop. D.

Police: Lay off 162 sworn officers. Eliminate 36 civilian positions from several divisions, including neighborhood policing, multicultural center, domestic violence, crime lab and abandoned vehicles. Close two police stations.
Total: $15.8 million

Fire: Lay off 60 firefighters. Eliminate staffing in helicopter program. Expand brownout program to idle up to 13 fire engines daily to save money on overtime. Reduce or eliminate lifeguard protection at city beaches.
Total: $7.2 million

Parks: Eliminate at least 25 positions. Close 12 of 13 city pools. Cancel several after-school and teen programs. Close nine recreation centers, two visitor centers and two gymnasiums. Reduced hours at remaining recreation centers and Balboa Park buildings. Reduction in beach and park maintenance, brush removal and ranger programs. Removal of beach fire pits.
Total: $11.4 million

Libraries: Eliminate more than 80 full-time positions. Close two libraries. Implement brownout program for remaining libraries where neighboring branches would be closed on alternating days. Cut a range of resources and services, including children’s books and online databases.
Total: $5.1 million”
